2016 Vanguard

Variety:  100% Shiraz
Region:  Hunter Valley
Vineyard: Bainton Vineyard

Tasting Notes

The blackness of this wine is ever-present, evident in not only the palate and the nose, but the colour in the glass is an inky purple-black as well. Aromatics follow this theme of broody darkness, deep aromas of black cherry, liquorice, currant and anise swirl with cold-drip coffee freshness. The muscularity of this wine is ever-present on the palate, a melange of surly black fruits and black peppery spices wrapping smoothly around the generous understory of velvety tannins. The foundation flavours are terrific, with lashings of brown cinnamon oak-spice power, adding even more length of flavour and harmony to this already flavour packed youngster.

Tasting Notes

This medium bodied Kester has wonderful drive and energy, revealing superb details on a long silken palate.
The nature of this Vintage has generated beautifully expressive flavours – sweet black cherry, Morello cherry, and rich plum signatures; hints of olive tapenade and Mediterranean herbs, lavender and thyme, add persistence, becoming more majestic with time in the glass. Tannins are sublimely satiny and gentle, with fine French oak marrying seamlessly with the savoury soft tannins from the grape.
Each of these aromas and flavours reveal themselves in stages, each an extraordinary step in harmony and balance.
The fantastic fruit drive and youthful colour of this release point to potential for aging another 10 years, however the silky –smooth tannins make this an excellent wine to drink now.

'The Doctor' is the zenith of our Shiraz winemaking, a selection of 100% Hunter Valley Shiraz barrels from exemplary batches, and made in only the most outstanding vintages. My father, Dr. Harold William Tulloch, is a viticultural scientist who has in so many ways shaped the course of my life and career - this wine is made and named in his honour.

Tasting Notes

The wine's colour displays a youthful purple rim over deep, inky red black. Aromatically, this wine is super dark and dense, with fully ripe black fruit crammed into every niche; hints of cinnamon, mocha, fresh nutmeg and clove sway over the fruit core - but these recede with breathing as the black fruit power punches through with a rapid ascension, building with stronger perfumed concentration of sweet liquorice, blackcurrant and cola.

In every way this aromatic intensity is matched on the palate, with opulent richness from start to finish, and flavours that are phenomenally energetic and long. Black cherry and liquorice command with delicious spicy depth, plus the savoury support of red cherry, cranberry and black olive. For all it's broody, dense flavour, this wine is a gentle giant - enormous concentration with equally lavish oak spices, regally poised amongst ripe, fine grained, satiny soft tannins. A sinewy, muscular powerhouse of flavour that will cellar beautifully for many years.

It is so wonderfully complete.
