Tasting Note

The FOM 2018 Chardonnay is a great ‘transitional’ story, being from two blocks of Chardonnay, only 50m apart.

  • Block 6 is a tiny section of Chardonnay clone P58 planted in 1968, which has been the source block of all FOM Chardonnays since 2009. Very low yield, lovely expressive fruits with finesse and length.
  • In 2014 we planted another, Block 4 which is close planted Chardonnay Clone 548 on Paulson rootstock. This block has twice the vine number per hectare, using a Burgundy principle of single guyot pruning. This clone is new in Australia with powerful and complex fruit expression, ultra-low yielding.

Elegant fruit aromas of fully-ripe white peach, nectarine plus tangy scents of pineapple. Wild ferment gives a gentle wash of nougat, oyster-shell and flint. Fine French oak lifts with understated notes of vanilla and hazelnut.

The striking palate feature of this wine is the elaborate fruit expression, energy, and complexity with length. This primary focus is bold and juicy, fresh peach, creamy soft-fig and crunchy-yellow-apple bond with long-lasting subtle finesse. Elaborate highlights of lemon yoghurt and pistachio nougat – from wild-ferment in barrel –build in the glass. Soft French oak completes with a satin-soft mouthfeel. These opulent flavours all unite along a vibrant line of acidity, giving that unwavering zest and freshness, designed for a long future.

Not yet in full reveal, the complex elemental nature of this wine will amplify over the next 7 to 10 years.
