Vineyard: McKelvey Vineyard
Vine Age: Vines planted in 1998
Tasting Note
A single vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz identified by the combination of vine site and clone. Soils are rich red-brown clay loam overlying a base of powdery limestone, on a gentle hillside with a north to north-west aspect on Deasys Road, Pokolbin.
Colour : Very deeply saturated crimson-dark scarlet, with a vibrant purple/blue at the rim.
Aroma: Great Shiraz sites in the Hunter reveal shape-shifting and vivid aromas – indirect rather than exact in nature. This wine brims with purple fruits and flowers – blackberry, blueberry, then boysenberry and spiced plum, fragrances of liquorice, lilac, and rosemary – all coming together separately and at once.
Palate: Equally laden with dark black fruit intensity, a fine gaminess with hints of sweet, floral savoriness. A wonderful structure which balances the blackberry and plummy dark fruits with a bright spicy lift of rosemary, all-spice herb, cured meat, plus fine clove. Large format oak has held the oak influence to a minimum. Here the brightness of fruit and its floral freshness really deserves to hold all of your attention.
The 2018 McKelvey delivers savoury excellence. It is incredibly young in its voyage of development yet so remarkable in its delivery. Over time it will build momentum and dial-up in every element.
