2018 Field of Mars Shiraz B1

FIELD OF MARS - Single Vineyard Range

Field of Mars Shiraz Block 1 2018

Variety:     100% Shiraz

Region:      Pokolbin Hunter Valley

Vineyard:   Keith Tulloch Field of Mars Vineyard

Vine Age:   Vines planted in 1968

Soils:         Dark cracking clay

Tasting note

Complex aromas show the best of old-vine intensity, combining concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry, dark aniseed and black peppercorn. Swirling in the glass reveals earthy spice and clove below the fresh perfumed floral charm of juniper and rosemary.

The palate shows tightly woven Syrah fruit power, mouth-filling richness, black-cherry, inky anise and cola, black pepper, black olive, and black chocolate. Fine French oak wood-spice flavours of cedar, bramble, and fine black tea sit in the background. The combination is so well reinforced and prolonged: dense, solid black fruit intensity with tongue-staining, firmly imbedded tannins. The complete package.

This is a wine of magnitude for the long haul.

Decant before pouring until it is 10 years from Vintage.

This wine is handmade for my wife Amanda, who loves aromatic and gentle reds.

Tasting Notes

Bright crimson-red with deep inky density, plus fresh purple and indigo-blue at the rim

Signature aromas reveal layer-upon-layer of floral expression –jasmine and honeysuckle, with deeper damask perfumes of rose-musk and pink rose-petal, black and red fruits twine together in a mix of sweet Kirsch black-cherry and briar-raspberry. Black berry shiraz flavours are super ripe, rich and satiny, deliciously long and lavishly coated with a black-chocolatey smoothness.

Deluxe oak-spices are generous on both the bouquet and palate: cinnamon and fine sandalwood contribute gentle silken tannins with spicy lift. The palate has luxurious texture and elegant softness, a refined power that delivers undeniable quality with sophisticated grace and finesse.

Field of Mars Semillon Block 2a 2018

Variety:   100% Semillon

Region:    Pokolbin, Hunter Valley

Vineyard: Keith Tulloch Field of Mars Vineyard

Vine age: Vines planted in 1968

Soil:         Fine, sandy alluvial

Tasting Note

The minerality of the Block 2A terroir generate tightly coiled aromas of pure juicy meyer-lemon with flecks of pith and zest, terrific fresh focus and energy. As the aromas open up, scents of fresh lemon-grass and enticing hints of spearmint are revealed.

The flavours are concentrated with zesty power: green and yellow citrus in a focussed beam of fresh juiciness and bright pithy tang. These citrus fruits fill the mouth with vibrant energy, yet the palate is light and fine, like freshly squeezed lime and lemon juice, showing transparently fine texture and poise. The finish is extraordinarily long, a swallowtail of minerality. This brightness, energy, line and length is crucial, giving perfect youthful balance now and true potential for great cellaring.
