Tasting Notes

Block 2A  Semillon 2014
Terrific focus showing classic lime and lemon zest with juicy power. Aromas are extraordinary : packed around this pure zesty core are flashes of lemon-curd, guava, and pineapple, all beaming equally, like facets of a clear-cut-diamond. The palate is so energetic, full of linear quartz brightness at this young stage, with the delicate fruit texture running to clean minerally acids with hints of chalk, combining with a final flair of lemongrass-and-wintergreen-like herbaceousness giving a crisp, long, finish. This youngster is a flawless gem, showing the ideal fine presence and pedigree for great cellaring beyond 15 years.

Block 6 Chardonnay 2014
The 50 year old Chardonnay vines have generated such positive opulence of powerful and fully-ripe yellow/golden fruit, abounding with fully-ripe nectarine, melon, and peach, all packed in with superb ripe expression and harmony. Produced by whole-bunch pressing, the fruit core remains elegant and refined, held in poise by bright (stalky) astringency onto the finish. As these flavours glide along, the subtle velvety texture of barrel ferment begins to build, and wonderfully complex highlights of musk-stick, and creamed corn, fill out the flavours as the wine breathes. This Chardonnay is already showing so much charm, but has serious potential for cellaring beyond 10 years.

Block 1 Shiraz 2013
The fruit from this block is always our gentle giant – enormously rich and complex, crammed with the old-vine Hunter Shiraz intensity of fresh black cherry, dark black-chocolate, plus currant, prune, and quince. The primary fruit power is matched by deluxe French oak, adding layer upon layer of fine perfumed cedar and vanilla, over background hints of clove and polished leather. The palate is equally compelling, with expansive, fully-ripe fruit reinforced by deep, velvety soft tannins: cassis and chocolate-cake and X-mas spices from the start to a very long, satisfying finish.
With decanting, this wine lifts another notch, as the oak spices lift enough to clearly reveal the magnitude of solid black-fruits, and the tannins hold their ground with gentle firm grip. 2013 was a very good Vintage for Hunter Shiraz – not as ample and deep as 2011 or 2014, but this wine is a classic – with great balance and complexity that keeps on giving. Ideal cellaring 15 years and beyond.

Tasting Notes

The fruit for this wine is sourced from a very unique site, which at 550m above sea level is the highest altitude vineyard in the Hunter Valley. This elevation and continental climate lead to cooler-climate aromatics, expressing violet and bramble with hints of eucalypt. These dark, aromatically tantalising fragrances point to this wine's power. Indeed, Flavours are palate saturating with terrific clarity, texture and creamy depth; the richness is liquorice-like and richly packed with plush purplish fruits, plus
chocolatey soft tannins that glide invitingly along in tight and centered focus. There is a wisp of stalky freshness adding to the finish, complete with a final assertion of gentle powdery firmness. This wine is a real statement of the vineyard's pedigree, expressing beautiful balance and structure ideal for cellaring beyond 15 years.
